The Ins and Outs of Sydney Life

23 04 2011

Items I have learned today:

Relies = relatives

Ringins = I will bring more people with me.. said along the lines of “I’ll even have some ringins!”

Aunty = ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation).. little weird reading emails and seeing things like.. good job Auntie!! (wtf???) yeah…

Pashed = kissed

So…. I am now living over in Marouba Beach with Shea and working at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. I work in the Audience and Consumer Affairs department.. which means the first week I got the honor or “deregistering” duplicates/spam emails as well as logging the same complaint 500 times.. that WAS FUN. Ugh. In any event, now into week 3 I now have the honor of responding to emails about programming myself. So I spend the day telling people what shows are on and where they can watch them online, or that we may SOMEDAY repeat them so make sure to check out our online tv guide. GLAMOUROUS I tell you. But, I do enjoy that I’m back working in media again, even though it’s a slightly different role than what I did at the Seattle Times back home. It’s also kind of cool they they actually film and tape shows at the same building I work at… not that I know any of the people filming.. but still.

Leena has now left Sydney (off to adventures in Thailand, Hong Kong, then back to Australia). In her last few weeks here, Shae, Leena and I attempted to be tourists, and by that I mean we went to Toronga Zoo (the zoo in Sydney that has absolutely GORGEOUS views of the city). Now practically every where you walk in this particular zoo they have signs about their “breeding programs” and THEY WEREN’T KIDDING. In the approximately 4 hours we were there we saw monkeys kiss one another in areas that probably should not be kissed.. as well as two huge a** turtles going to town.
Pictures follow.

I have a court date in a week.. this is to take psycho roommate to the Australia version of small claims court (called the tribunal) to see if I can get my $1200 bond back. I am REALLY not looking forward to seeing him face to face again.. but… what can you do. Think positive thoughts people.

And let’s see what else is new? I went back to Melbourne for a weekend to see the formula one race.. and pretty much decided then and there that it’s home.. so I will be moving back to Melb in June (for my last 3 months in Australia).

The Formula One race was cool, but having never been to one before, nor really followed it on tv (my mother is an AVID fan.. by that I mean watching it at 5am back at home).. I was NOT expecting there to be 58 laps. It’s not like you can even see the cars when they drove by! I attempted to take pictures for the first 10 laps or so.. then gave up, and even though we found a spot right NEXT to the track.. I just ended up watching the big screen next to us.. it made it a LOT easier to follow.

So I’ll spend one last month here in Sydney, complete with a fabulous date with the Australian Court System.. hopefully that will be my last big adventure in this city! I’ll wrap things up at ABC, hang out for a bit and return to Melb by the end of May. It’s not that I don’t enjoy Sydney, it’s that I miss Melbourne… and Sydney is RIDICULOUSLY expensive. I earn less here, have to pay more taxes (because I cant get my living away from home allowance) and have a higher living expenses which equates to = Maria saving up Nothing. But I will enjoy my last month here, and do my best to see and explore parts of the city that I haven’t discovered yet, but I must say.. I am really looking forward to returning to Melbourne (and people from Melb who might happen to be reading this… SHUT IT.. I don’t want to hear any ‘I told you so’s)…

Until Next Time………
